I use the WP plugin version and I had set the slider to display with no theme. I noticed that it had no loading image and the images jumped about a bit on loading. Even when I added a loading gif to the css it may no difference. I used a modified version of your code above and it loads the first image and waits for all the others to load before starting the slideshow.

Do you think it would be faster if you had a bigger texture?

You could use a 2048x2048 (or less...) sized texture that could contain 64 256x256 images.
If you needed more than 64 frames you would use a different texture containing the rest of the images.
Then just move the UV data around.
Correct?

I just wonder if setting a texture the size of 2048x2048 would be faster than just constantly uploading bitmapData.
